I’ve been working through a goals program I purchased recently. I bought it to get myself more focused because if I’m going to teach goal setting than I need to make sure that I’m on top of my own goals.
In this particular program there’s an exercise where you write down all the limiting people in your life from the past and the present. Then, write down all the negative, limiting statements that they’ve said to you. This was a powerful exercise. I was doing it last night and for some reason yesterday was just a bad day. I was questioning everything I was doing in terms of my role as a father and my role as a coach and blogger (the latter being my most recent role). It was one of those days where I wanted to just throw in the towel and go get a job somewhere and forget about my dream of inspiring others.
But this exercise and the one after really changed my mind. The second exercise was to write down my own self limiting thoughts. WOW. That’s all I can say. I came up with 22 thoughts right off the bat that I struggle with. Now, keep in mind that I’ve been working on myself and involved in personal development DAILY for the last 16 years! AND, for the last almost 5 years, I’ve been listening to self talk CDs and teaching the concept of self talk to clients and pretty much anyone who’ll listen. So what does all this tell me (and you)? That if I was able to write down 22 thoughts right off the bat in about 10 minutes that I struggle with after working on myself daily for 16 years, how many thoughts could people who have never worked on themselves write down? Furthermore, I was practically in tears writing them because I was pissed that they still had that much of a stronghold on my life. Many of those thoughts were responsible for me almost calling it quits!
That’s why I can NEVER stop what I’m doing. I can never stop learning myself and I could never stop teaching this to others. Its far too important! People are struggling out there and they don’t know why. Here’s the answer: Because people in our past have put limitations on us and we’ve accepted them! We’ve allowed their limiting thoughts to penetrate our minds to the point that we actually believe them! On top of that, we’ve allowed those thoughts to determine who we are and what we can do with our lives.
But there is hope. The hope is that we can change this. by learning how to change our thoughts through the effective use of self talk we can begin to reverse the process and learn to believe in ourselves again. Don’t let another minute go by without learning how to do that. A great place to start is to get my DVD (on the right of this page-click on Sales Power DVD or this link) "Secrets of Sales Power." But don’t be fooled by the title. It’s not just for sales people. It’s for anyone who wants to begin the process of getting rid of the limiting remarks that control our lives.
I’ve also opened up comments on this particular post because I want to hear your experiences with limiting self talk. I’ll also respond back to you if I can offer any suggestions. :) I know you can do this and I definitely believe in you!
