Network Marketing: Do You Have the Right Posture?

When you see that word posture in the title, what do you think of? Do you think of how you hold your shoulders or how you stand? Actually, the way it’s used is very similar to that. It’s how you hold yourself, or your attitude when you’re building your business. By building I mean when you’re talking to people about your business. And in Network Marketing, there’s no other way to build your business except by talking to people. Over the next several posts I’m going to discuss some things you can do to increase your posture.

What is your attitude when you’re talking to people about your business? I want you to think about that as I go through some simple things that will help you. Be honest with yourself when reading this. It can make the difference in building a small business or a huge one.

  • Don’t beg people to look at your business. Begging comes in many forms. Most networkers don’t think they are begging when in fact they are. A good example of this is when you call someone and as soon as they pick up the phone you’re so excited that you get "diarrhea of the mouth." You just go all out trying to flatter them about what you know about what you have. The prospects gut reaction is to hang up. Or worse, hang up and change their number! The other form of begging is calling them 3-4 times a day until they get back to you. After all, you don’t want them to slip away, right? Keep it up and not only will they slip away, they’ll run away never to return or be heard from again!
  • Do show your business to as many people as possible. The difference between "begging" and "showing" is your attitude that you know what you’ve got. You understand that you have to show it to people but you also understand that there’s no "special person" who’s going to make or break your business. In my early days of network marketing that’s how I looked at people. I thought, "Oh this guy is my first diamond!" I’d get all pumped up leaving his house after showing the plan then head back for the follow up a couple days later to find the house dark and my first night materials in a Walgreen’s bag hanging on the mailbox out by the road! Those were some tough nights. I eventually learned that that type of person, the kind who couldn’t say no to my face was not the type of person I wanted to be in business with.

Next time we’ll cover some more things you can do to increase your posture as you build your business. I believe in you and I know you can do it!
