Having Blind Insight

During church this morning our pastor was talking about the gospel reading and it really struck a chord with me. He was talking about the reading from John chapter 9 where Jesus healed a blind man’s eyes by spitting "on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes." Then he told the man to go wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man went and washed, and came back able to see.

My pastor said he read the passage over and over as he prepared for his homily and what jumped out at him was that Jesus didn’t heal the man by opening his eyes, he healed him by covering his eyes. What that meant to my pastor, and to me after thinking about it, is that the best way to heal ourselves is not by looking outside of ourselves but by looking in. That’s why it’s called INsight.

What a marvelous approach to life and the way we should look at things. I don’t know about you but I often look outside of myself to fix things. Only when I’m really "connected" do I realize that its most likely me and my reaction to something based on my self esteem at that moment. A good example is something that happened this past week. I was frustrated with an associate of mine and I was really upset at this person. But it wasn’t until I lost almost a whole day "fuming and fretting", as one of my favorite authors Norman Vincent Peale says, did I realize that I needed to check with myself first. And when I did, I felt a lot better about things.

We can’t control other people but we can absolutely control our reactions to them. And that’s what INsight is all about. Like the blind man whose eyes Jesus covered with mud, we too must become blind to our feelings and take a deeper look inside to find the answer.

I know you can do it and I definitely believe in you!
