I read a great quote today by Erich Fromm who was a philosopher and a psychoanalyst. Here’s the quote: "A person’s main task in life is to give birth to oneself." What an awesome statement! How different would your life be if you put that on your goal list? If your only objective in life was to become the best you could be in all areas, how would that change your life? It’s worth thinking about.

There’s a sculpture I love called The Self-Made Man which is a man carving himself out of a stone. That’s how I’ve always viewed my own life. We make ourselves and re-make ourselves on a daily basis. We have successes daily and failures daily. Sometimes we finish our days and we are satisfied with what we’ve done and there are other days we are terribly dissatisfied. In either situation we can’t rest on our laurels. We have to have a goal going into the next day to do more, yes, but more importantly, to be more. One of my mentors always reminds me that we are human beings, not human doings. Every time I hear that it’s a crude wake-up call.

I challenge you to start each day going forward with a goal or objective to be more than the day before. If you do that, this year and every year going forward will be better than the one before.
